Not Child Safe December 13, 2008 B. Hildabrand (TX) I purchased this item for my son. He just loves to play with it. But, after two days the lid split in two. My son is very gentle with his toys. The wood had a weak spot and was already cracked prior to opening and a block as well. Thank goodness I did not turn away when a piece of the block broke off. My son eats everything, he would have choked, or much worse. So far the rest of the toy seams to be fine. But I just had to toss it. Could not take a chance on any other pieces falling apart. I would pay more money for better quality wood. cheaper is not always the way to go.I am surprised this item has not been recalled. I see from other reviews this happens quite often. I like Melissa & Doug's products. But, don't waste your money on this one. I will try the tupperware sorter recommended per one review.
Too much going on and no fun for a toddler December 8, 2008 A. Jackson (Arizona) First, I should say that they must have recently adjusted the design because the lid on the one we just got slides into place, unlike the picture. But it still is frustrating because the design requires you to turn the box over and over to find the right slots, and the lid easily slides out. We had a really great wooden shape sorter Shape Sorting Box by Selecta that our son starting losing interest in after quickly learning how to put all of the shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) into the correct slots. He loved it and will still play with it, but we thought a new challenge might be good for him. This new box is a bad design because even his mother and father who have advanced degrees cannot easily tell the shapes apart perfectly. The parallelogram is so similar to the diamond, both are even yellow, that I have no idea whose toddler wouldn't get frustrated with the toy before learning how to play with it. Also, he is easily distracted by the slots on the sides and front and top that if one shape isn't fitting, he'll give up quickly and go to another slot and then lose interest. I like the idea of having a couple of more complex shapes, but this is ridiculous. Also, the blocks won't fit into even the correct holes sometimes because it fills up and then a new block won't drop in all the way. I am sure I am forgetting several other things that are irritating - bottom line is that you should keep looking for a better shape sorter.
The paint chipped off. November 29, 2008 AnneSAHM (Southeast Iowa) I bought this shape sorter for my daughter. After only a few times playing with it, the paint started to chip off of the blocks. Very poorly made.
Middling Quality, Middling usefulness September 28, 2008 Elise (the top of the Delta) I am not impressed by the quality of Melissa and Doug products, especially compared to brands like Plan. M&D seems to skimp or wood quality and on the objects' finish. This shape sorter compares unfavorable to Plan's 3-shape sort. The M&D sorter arrived cracked. The blocks aren't very smooth and don't feel great in the hand like Plan's do. And more isn't necessarily better. There are lots of shapes here, but our child likes the box better than sorting, while she loves to sort with the Plan sorter. I'd recommend the simpler, elegant Plan sorter over this one. And coupled with what I've seen of M&D products, I'm going to bypass them from now on and spend a few dollars more for toys that will last multiple children (and grandchildren).
melissa & doug are great, but this toy is lacking... September 25, 2008 N. N. Holley We have tons of Melissa & Doug toys and really are impressed with their overall durability, educational value, and price. However, this is one of the few pieces I would not buy again. The shapes are chunky, varied and colorful, but the design is flawed. It is very difficult for my daughter (received it at one year is now nearly two) to get the shapes in the holes because of the layout. She has other shape sorters that are much more child friendly. Overall this is not an enjoyable toy for her.
