Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Robosapien Media is the world's first multimedia interactive robot. At 25" tall, he comes with 100 preprogrammed functions and a multitude of different modes. Features include a head-mounted VGA camera, built-in microphone, full-color LCD screen in his chest, 10-watt speakers, and a back-mounted sub-woofer and MP3 player.

With humanoid body movements, infrared vision and stereoscopic sound and touch sensors, RS Media interacts with his environment in amazingly realistic ways. He recognizes colors, tracks movements with his eyes, avoids obstacles and reacts to sounds as you control him with the wireless remote. A full range of motion and a flexible waist enable him to pick things up, drop and throw objects, sit, lie down, and get up again. RS Media includes four demo modes, guard mode, sleep mode and auto shut-off mode. Can be programmed directly from the controller or in positional "puppet" mode for easy teaching on the PC software, included. SD card not included. Requires 6 "D" batteries and 7 "AA" batteries, not included.

Additional Features:

  • Listen to your favorite music, take and display digital images and watch videos
  • Download and display information from the Internet or import your own data using the external memory card slot
  • Select from one of four distinctive, attitude-filled personalities; or create your own personality to edit his movements, sound files and video files (PC software included)
  • Choreograph a dance routine to a favorite music track - a full range of motion makes him a great dancer

5 out of 5 stars A lot of robot for a low price   September 7, 2008
Scott Blais (Mpls, MN)
Well not much to add previous posters have listed all the great features. But the robot has an embedded Linux kernel and is Java powered! Now there isn't many Sun Java development kits for the RS Media floating around but they are out there, and there has been a promise of more to be released. In any case its nice to know that its there, and there has been some great hacking going on at getting to the Linux at robocommunity.com. One other thing not stressed here is the impressive sound(thanks to onboard subwoofer) this thing puts out. The PC editing software is also rather nice but still needs some tweaking. In any case its a robot that has some growth potential and usefulness(MP3's pictures, videos etc). It also has the luxury of conforming to whatever personality you create, so for these reasons it shouldnt end up as another toy robot that gets put on the shelf.

4 out of 5 stars RS Media   April 26, 2008

WowWee Robosapien RS Media

Product is fine though only drawback I had was the USB 1.1 connector cable for hooking to the computer. I found it easier to use the SD 1GB Memory Card, once the robot had setup the directory on the card, in my USB SD card reader to send data to and from the memory card rather than using the provided USB cable which was slow and unreliable. I have loaded and played with several new 'personalities' for my RS Media ranging from a Battlestar Gallactica Cylon to Bugs Bunny with hilarious and fun results.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Multimedia Robot   January 28, 2008

First off, I have always liked robots, so finding this one for the price and with his features was a real joy. But up until recently, they've been cost inhibiting. Most good consumer grade robots cost between $350 and $1500. So, for under $299, the WowWee RSM with its full featured list of functions seems well worth the price of admission.

Pros:
- Talks, Walks, and Dances
- Movable arms and hands
- Built-in Sound and Camera
- Customizable personalities
- Sound and motion detection.
- Programmable
- Built in MP3 Player
- And more.

Cons:
- Some issues with walking straight
- Difficulty walking on carpet
- Some builds have torso spring issues
- Turning is cumbersome
- Some programming glitches

Having listed the Pros and Cons, I have to say, that I am enjoying my RSM robot all the same. Even with its few shortcomings, the RS Media is a fun toy to have. Bring it out at a party, and watch people gather around to be entertained.

Oh ya, and don't forget the batteries. This bad boy uses 6 D-Size in his feet, 4 AA-Size in his body, and 3 AA-Size in the controller.

I'm hoping that WowWee comes out with a V2 for the RSM, something like a RSM-V2, that walks more human-like, and has some of the Cons (above) fixed.

If you want a fun multi-media robot to have and play around with for you and the kids, the RS Media from WowWee is a good choice.

This product was a Christmas present and when it was opened and the batteries were put in, it only stayed on for a second and did not come back on, so I am sending it back for a refund.

4 out of 5 stars Getting there.   December 10, 2007

I've had the RS Media for about 6 months. I even did a YouTube video using it to do a "newscast."

It really is Robosapien 2.5. I modded it to do a few things like a Star Trek, Star Wars, and Southpark mode, using wav files to substitute for the pre-installed characters. Those are pretty fun, though limited.

It has cool things like an MP3 mode and a picture taking mode... though I don't use those much.

It's mainly a good "party" or "novelty" robot.

I wish Wowee would make it more useful like making it better able to walk on carpet and putting a wireless web cam in it to remotely walk around the house when you are out.
